Part 5 3rd Year helper

3rd year internal show

For the past 2 weeks I have been very busy helping out at the 3rd year’s preparation for their internal show. I was assigned a 3rd year to help she was very organised and didn’t really require much help. I went and ordered some shoes for her collection from Zara. Once this was complete she didn’t need me to do anything else. So I decided since I was free to see what other 3rd years required in the way of help and I’m so glad I did. I went into the knit workshop as this is the specialism I would like to go into and is something that really excites me. For the first day I was doing odd jobs for all three of the 3rd years doing knit and helping with fittings. I became Mars Sasu helper her collection was inspired by geometric shapes and involved knitting and embroidery.

For the first few days of helping Mars I was knitting triangle sections on the knitting machines which would be used as a panel on her coat. It was a little while since I had been on a knitting machine but once I started it all came flooding back and at the end of the day I had knitted 40 triangle sections. I really liked the texture the triangles created for the panel of the coat and the contrast of colours.

I also helped Mars with the embellishment of her coat panels I really liked the idea for the coat as it looked like graph paper and with the triangles it really reflected Mars theme of geometry. The fabric was sprayed white which gave the fabric added thickness as the fabric was original silver it took a few coats to give it a good coverage. I then sewed the triangles on top of the fabric due to the large squares in the fabric I thought it was going to be pretty straight forward, however, I found it hard to create different shaped triangles as I ended up creating mainly right angles. I also sewed some triangles on a panel of her tops this was difficult as the fabric was Aida and had smaller squares then the coat and the yarns were slightly too thick to go through the holes so I had to be really careful.

To continue the geometry theme Mars wanted us to embellish socks with triangles which would go over her shoes to add detail and complete the look.

I also helped Mars construct her garments I helped to sew up the dress and complete the coat. I also helped with some hand sewing to finish of her garments.

Helping Mars complete her final collection and seeing how she used knit in her collection and how she used different yarns to create different textures was big learning curve. The whole experience has been very helpful and interesting as being in  the knit room allowed me to see how all the 3rd years in knit handled and placed knit into their collections and each collection is so different it just highlights the possibilities that can be done with knit. Helping Mars just reconfirms that knit is what I really want to explore and is something I would like to push and specialise. The whole process shows how organised you have to be in 3rd year to make sure you get your collections completed and showed what to do and what not to do

I was so glad I was able to be involved this experience I was unsure about helping out at the beginning but feel the skills I have learned, experience gained and general team work are invaluable to draw on for the future.
